Trevor Lewis Blows Away Field at Black Rock For $4,000 in NY Nationals
Trevor Lewis was the odds-on favorite as 34-teams rolled in to the pits at Black Rock on Friday Night. After a tough heat race however he was starting in 14th and had plenty of work to do in the A-Main. By halfway he was in front and checking out for a $4,000 top prize.
Lewis, of Upper Black Eddy, PA, got through a six-car pileup on the opening lap and quickly picked off spots to take the lead from Blake Breen on lap 13 and never look back for his third career $4,000 Victory at Black Rock.
“I really love this track,” declared the 6’6 Lewis in Victory Lane. “This track has really changed since I won the Fall Nationals, but that top lane still works.”
On the opening circuit, Tim Iulg looped his No. 1k in turn two while running in fifth. He blocked the track for the entire inside line and took out five others in the process. Iulg flipped over backwards after contact with Shawn Donath and Judi Bates. Tim Kelly and Lance Yonge were also involved along with Scott Bonnell who was the only one that could continue.
When the field had a double-file restart, the Homestead Coffee Roasters/ McClaren Motorsports No. 21L was slated in 10th. He was in fifth on the second lap and after a few laps running around there, was able to dive underneath Scott Kreutter for second. From there it was only a matter of time before he would chase down Blake Breen and pass him for the lead.
Breen, who won his first career sprint feature at BRS five years ago to the date, had checked out from the drop of the opening green flag. He just could not work the cushion as well as Lewis though and on lap 13 relegated the top spot.
For the final 17 laps it was simply about getting through lapped traffic for Lewis. While there were some tenuous moments the No. 21L was strong enough for his third Lucas Oil ASCS Patriot A-Main Win of the Year, his second in a row in the A-Verdi King of Central New York Series.
“Those lapped cars scarred me a few times there towards the end, they really slowed me up,” noted Lewis after the event, who had to move around some top runners, including Jared Zimbardi.
Lewis won the Fall Nationals events back in 2004 and 2005. He looked just as prolific on Friday Night as he did five years ago. He was also the hard charger in the event, propelling him to the Gater Racing News Hard Charger of the Season Lead.
Blake Breen would hold on for second in his No. 8 as he was strong all night long in his attempt to make it a Breen Sweep in 2009 for sprint races at BRS. He noted afterwards that the engine was popping after the first few circuits.
“Trevor drove by me like I was tied to a post,” he stated.
Jessica Zemken went to her familiar bottom line to run up to third, but she did it in a new ride, taking the Schultz Motorsports No. 64 out for the first time. With Tony Stewart wrenching on the car during the night, “JZ” had a plenty of attention in her pits throughout the night.
Scott Kreutter drew the pole position, which was good, but it also meant he had to commit to the bottom on the initial start. That allowed Breen to jump in front. He would slip back to fourth for his second top-5 of the year at Black Rock.
Bobby Breen, the winner at Black Rock back in May, was way off at the start of the race but would rally back in style as he would complete the top-five for the second straight Lucas Oil ASCS Patriot Event.
Justin Barger prevailed over Chuck Hebing for sixth as Hebing suffered front wing issues late in the 30-lap feature. Alain Bergeron was eighth with Bubba Broderick and Don Adamczyk completing the top-10.
Bryan Howland and Jared Zimbardi, the top-two in patriot points, struggled on the night to finish 11th and 13th respectively.
It was a wild night overall at Black Rock, as the feature was completed at 1:00 A.M. Saturday. With NASCAR stars at the track, extra events and high car counts in all divisions made in a full night of action.
Jared Fink was an early retire on the night when he flipped his No. 21F on the opening lap of his heat. Jeff Frasier and Gary Troutman also had short nights, as they suffered motor problems in hot laps for the second straight BRS event.

Wayne Robertson Breaks Through at Black Rock For First Career BRP CanAm Tour Win
In the BRP CanAm Late Model Feature, Wayne Robertson had waited a long time just to run the feature, and he waited a while to move underneath Bryce Davis with just five laps left to get in front and stay there to get his long-awaited first career BRP CanAm Win.
“I’ve been waiting for this for a long time,” stated a parched Robertson in Victory Lane.
Robertson was consistently on the bottom in his No. 20, leading many times in the turns but never able to take the top spot from Davis. With five laps to go he finally made a big slide job in turn three under the No. 94, but it would not stick that time around as he fell back to second.
“I went in knew I wasn’t lifting”, declared Robertson afterwards.
The next trip around, as Robertson made a better attempt to close the deal, Davis’ right rear went flat at the send time, ending the night for the No. 94 is disappointing fashion.
For the final three circuits, Jeff Chesebro gave chase on Robertson, but would have to settle for his third straight runner-up finish in BRP CanAm Races at BRS.
Bruce Miller drove up to third with Dave DuBois and Steve Dixon completing the top-five.
With big fields and important point battles on the line in many of the divisions, the celebrities from the NASCAR World excited the fans with some great action in sportsman modifieds.
Bobby Decker, crewmember for the Roush Fenway Racing No. 99 Sprint Cup Team driven by Carl Edwards, dominated the NASCAR Sportsman Special as he made it look easy, pulling away on a celebrity field.
The former Orange County Fair Speedway Big Block competitor picked up the win in Nick Guererri’s No. 25g.
As Decker was driving away, defending match winner David Reutimann had to work hard to fight off his MWR Teammate Marcos Ambrose. Reutimann, a former modified racer, had plenty of experience on dirt over Ambrose, as well as AJ Allmendinger, who was on dirt for the second time. It didn’t seem to matter though as the “Rookies” battled hard to create a three-car battle.
Reutimann would hang on for second as Allmendinger moved around Ambrose for third. Bob Dillner from Speed TV was fifth while Nationwide Regular Michael McDowell was sixth. Steve Dietrich from Roush Fenway was a modified regular in California and completed the field.
Craig Gardner used his lucky draw that put him on the outside of the front row for the Sportsman Feature to pick up his first win of the year.
Gardner, of Beaver Dams, held off a fierce No. 2L of Loren Lincoln for the majority of the event and Todd Henderson in the closing laps to put the Swarthout Recycling No. 14s in the winner’s circle.
“We’ve been fast all year long, in between my mistakes,” noted Gardner in Victory Lane. “I was really worried about Todd Henderson, because I knew he was coming up through there and he is tough.”
Gardner ran the middle of the track for much of the race while Lincoln was committed to the inside rim of the track. On multiple occasions, Lincoln dipped his car to in the infield but each time would come out just fine.
With two laps to go, Todd Henderson drove by Lincoln on the outside and secretly applied pressure to Gardner. The third year competitor was too strong though as he snuck away to his second career win.
Lincoln would hold on to third while Nate DeLong and Randy McCulloch completed the top-five.
Steve Doell pulled off a pass coming to the white flag in the 600 Micro Sprint event to get around David Ferguson and pick up the big win.
Doell stalked the No. 45 of Ferguson after a late race caution and made it pay off when the lapped cars slowed the pace. John Smith, Darrell Ruggles and Matt Smith were the rest of the top-five.
The 270 Micro Sprint Feature saw Kevin Ward control the event over Shannon Doran and hang on for the win.
Chris Fisher has been battling all year long with Frank Guererri, and this Friday Night he was able to move around the No. 113Jr late in the going to score his fourth win of the season.
Fisher, of Bluff Point, moved in to the lead of the Street Stock Feature on lap 14 and never looked back as he inched closer the points lead.
The defending Track Champion picked up his first win since June 19th picked through lapped traffic nicely and had was very happy in Victory Lane.
Guererri would hold on for second while Jim McAfee was a solid third. Jared Hill picked up fourth with Jason White completing the top-five.
Terry Povoski got to the lead by lap four of the 4-cylinder feature and never looked back to continue his domination of the class this season. Even though Brad Rathbun was a strong second, he had nothing for Povoski. Rich Sharpsteen rebounded from an early race incident for third while his teammate Brett Crawford and C.J. Winslow completed the top-five.
Ronnie Hill slowly worked his way through the pack in the Enduro Finale. With five laps to go he finally moved around his teammate Gary Baker and held off Joe Birdsall for the $1,000 top prize to conclude the night of racing.
Dylan Cecce took the lead in the bandit feature when Josh Wallenbeck got sideways right in front of him on lap six of the 10-lap event. When a caution came out on the final lap, Cecce was put back behind Wallenbeck. It didn’t matter though as the “Flyin’ X” did just that and soared back in to the lead to win his 13th of the year.
“I’ve got to apologize to Josh for getting in to him, I tried to check up but I couldn’t slow it down enough,” commented Cecce after the event. “I was glad that caution came back out.”
Behind Cecce and Wallenbeck was Noah Herrington, who scored his career best in third. Sarah Johnson had her career best in fourth with Zach Teed completing the top-five.
