Alan Johnson Denies Two Straight For Paine At Outlaw

(Dundee, NY) – Steve Paine methodically worked his way up through the field from starting mid-pack and looked like he would win two in a row and the 95th Dundee feature win of his career. But the rear end of the No. 7x wouldn’t take him that far and Alan Johnson would pick up his second win of the season in the Friendly Ford No. 14J.
Tyler Siri led the opening three laps, but would see a mechanical problem related to the radiator end his night. His son, Jordan Siri in a backup 5* ride, would assume the lead on the restart but Paine took the lead officially as lap four got put on the board.
Several failed restarts after a lap thirteen accident saw second place Daryl Hilkert try and get the advantage on Paine, but Paine had none of it. He would then lead the field back to a single file restart and pull away.
But with less than five laps to go, Johnson began inching closer and closer to Paine. Most thought Paine had uncharacteristically made a bad choice on tire, but that theory was thwarted post-race when it was learned of the mechanical problem. Johnson was at the right place at the right time and led the final lap for the win.
Damage and all, Paine finished second over Hilkert, Gary Tomkins and Brady Fultz.
It had been a long seventeen-year driving career for Lawrenceville, PA driver Mike Buchanan. His journey spanned four cylinders and onward to his current day Crate Sportsman, but the driver of the Precision Racing Fabrication had yet to grace victory lane.
That all changed on Friday night at Outlaw Speedway. Buchanan had a fast race car and held off all challengers to lead wire-to-wire to pick up his first career win. Chris Silvers, AJ Lloyd, Loren Lincoln and Mike Jackson filled out the top five.
An up and down season and a frustrating finish the week before led Brad Smith to Victory Lane for the first time in 2016 on Friday night in the Farmers Insurance IMCA Modifieds. He would take over the lead of the race on lap eight and would hold off challenges from former track champion Phil Yaw.
Yaw was trying to end a three-year winless drought on Friday and showed that his streak may come to an end in the very near future. It had been several season for Smith as well, but was happy to end that while being interviewed and sitting on his right front tire. Smith thanked the fans in stands for supporting Outlaw Speedway every week, saying that the fans are why the racers do what they do.
A popular win for Smith was flanked by Yaw, Rich Karlnoski, Rich Mitchell Jr. and Shawn Bruce within the top five. Bruce continues to lead a close point race in the Farmers Insurance IMCA Modifieds.
In the Crate Late Model Feature, Jason Knowles took off at the green flag and didn’t look back.
He held the lead throughout the twenty-lap event, leading Adam Depuy by about a 2.5 second lead on lap four. The five-car battle was cut down to four when Alan Chapman went pit side with a mechanical issue on lap thirteen.
Jason Knowles maintained his lead and led Depuy, Buono, and Brian Knowles to the checkered flag. Brian Knowles was driving Frank Guererri’s No. 113 in a great gesture of sportsmanship to allow Knowles to earn the RUSH home track points. Guererri does not follow the RUSH Tour, which gave him the opportunity to lend a helping hand to a competitor in a tough position. Knowles broke his own No. 7 during the heat race.
LaVerne Knickerbocker took his third win of 2016 on Friday night after a battle for the lead with CJ Guererri. Jayson Smart paced the field early, but Guererri was itching for his first win of 2016.
Guererri took the lead on lap five and looked to cruise away to his first Outlaw win since winning the biggest race of his career, the 2015 Empire 100, last October.
Knickerbocker was extremely fast though, challenging Guererri for the top spot on lap twelve with Guererri nosing ahead at the line. In the first and second turn though, the two made contact which allowed Knickerbocker to squeak by for the lead- a spot he would not relinquish.
Knickerbocker led Chuck Winslow, Guererri, Quinn Sutherland and Jared Hill across the line in the top five.
Without a doubt, one of the best if not the best race of the night was in the four cylinder division. Ray Hyer somehow held off a pack of five cars chasing him down for the lead in lap traffic.
The winner of the race was clearly going to be the driver who navigated traffic the quickest. On this night, Hyer was the man for the job. Hyer was searching for his first win since the passing of his young daughter, which made for a very heartfelt and emotional moment in Outlaw Victory Lane.
Hyer held off the advances of Codie Baker and JJ Kreidler to pick up the win. The final finishing order was Hyer, Kreidler, Billy Bowers and Scott Bradley. Bradley now pulls within one point of the championship lead.
“Burnin’ Bacon’ Jordan Bacon took his fourth consecutive trip to Victory Lane in the Winner’s Circle Deli Bandits.
Bacon took off at the green flag and held the lead, and by lap three had a three-car lead on Austin Labar. Driving an unfamiliar car this week didn’t seem to affect Bacon’s performance as he held the lead throughout the race.
Labar caught up to Bacon on laps seven and eight on the backstretch of the ten-lap event. They battled for the lead but Bacon took the checkered with Labar close behind. Joey Clark and Steven Perkins III rounded out the field.
The night was highlighted by all of the fans and drivers saluting Jeff Searles with a ‘reg rag salute’ prior to each feature, with every division participating in a four-wide salute. The Crate Late Models started five cars and even successfully completed a five-wide salute for the fans and Searles, who was certainly watching from above.
